Dogs, by nature, don't seem to be interested in smelling good. For the typical dog owner, there's no better time to snuggle with your pet than when it is freshly bathed and smelling like that nice flowery shampoo. For the typical dog, there's no better time to snuggle than when it has rolled in something icky.<br><br> Keeping your dog nicely groomed is helpful. If you don't bathe your dog yourself, area groomers are more than willing to help out. Most established groomers are reputable; ask your vet or other dog owners for recommendations. If you do all your dog's grooming, there are increasingly more tools to help you out.<br><br> Start your grooming with a good brushing. That will eliminate mats and other problems with your dog's coat before he gets wet. Combs and brushes should be matched to your pet's coat. For short-haired dogs, use a rubber curry comb to remove dead hair and a natural-bristle brush. Dogs with longer hair need a pin brush and sometimes a slicker brush to get mats out. The key is to tackle a little section of hair at a time. Some dogs dislike having their hind quarters or tail brushed, so work on that last if your dog is sensitive.<br><br> Then it's on to the bath. Tired of bending over in the bathtub or working outdoors to lather and rinse your dog? Specific grooming tubs are available that fit most dogs, even large breeds. The Booster Bath is a tub on legs that can be set up in your bathroom or garage.<br><br> When it's empty, it's relatively light to move and store. The Booster Bath features include an adjustable leash restraint with a collar that stays in the tub, so if it gets wet that's OK. The bottom of the bath is ridged and cushioned, making it comfortable and not slippery. <br><br> The back of the tub is open so your dog can easily leap into it without you doing any lifting.<br><br> The Booster Bath also features a built-in caddy to hold shampoo, and a drain with a discharge hose that can be positioned in your own bathtub or sink.<br><br> Shampoo is important - be sure to get one that is made specifically for dogs. Human shampoos can be too harsh for animals and can strip away oil that a dog needs for healthy skin. My favorite dog shampoo is Cloud Star's Lavender & Mint Buddy Wash, available in 19-ounce bottles from Animal Crackers Pet Supply in Corvallis. The same company makes an excellent conditioner, Buddy Rinse, that is good for dogs with longer hair.<br><br> Cloud Star also makes a Cedarwood & Neem variety that repels fleas. A bottle sells for $9.99.<br><br> You can also get a Buddy Splash conditioning spritzer for good odor between baths.<br><br> The nice thing about the Cloud Star shampoos is that they are soap free. This is important if you're using a flea treatment on your dog like Advantage or Frontline. A shampoo with soap will remove the flea treatment, forcing you to reapply after each bath - and that gets expensive. Soap-free products cost a little more but are better on the coat and preserve the flea treatment on the skin.<br><br> If your dog smells particularly bad, you may need an odor-reducing shampoo. Gold Medal makes a good deodorizing shampoo that should be lathered and left on the dog for five minutes. Rinse and repeat to get rid of nasty odors, even skunk. Gold Medal Pet Deodorizing Shampoo also has conditioners to keep the coat healthy, and retails for $8.99.<br><br> To start the bath, get the dog completely wet. Start lathering shampoo on the dog's back and then move to stomach, legs and tail.<br><br> When you rinse, use one hand to lift up fur and make sure all the soap is out. Soap that remains in the coat makes it look dull. Clean the dog's face with a washcloth so you don't get water in his eyes or ears. Wet ears can be a good environment for some kinds of fungi.<br><br> Sometimes during the washing, your dog may indicate the urge to shake. I suggest keeping two towels nearby - one close to throw over a dog about to shake, and the second to dry when the bath is done.<br><br> A bath can be fun for dogs. If your dog doesn't enjoy it, make the event a game. Give your dog lots of treats and something really good when the bath is over.
